Jeff Atwood posted "So You Don't Want to be a Programmer After All" a few weeks ago on his Coding Horrors blog.
It's an interesting look at the opinions surrounding how passionate developers should be and at the sorts of conversations that are difficult to have online about one's career.
Coming from the start-up and small company perspective - I fall solidly on the side of Passion. I experience far more value working with a developer who really loves what she/he does. I want to work with people who are "geeked" about what they do - regardless of their role.
So what is a person to do if they just don't love the development track for their career but it is what they studied and have experience with? I would take a look at what it is you do love. I could be a developer - I am definitely excited about software... but really, I am more excited about leading teams of people and being responsible for the output of more than just what I do. And, I love designing what will be built and how it will work. That tends to put me in a management position - which because I also own the company works out pretty well.
But even in the larger enterprise, there are a ton of positions where a background in programming is valuable. The solutions for things like custom client configurations, new product designs and internal system enhancements all need to function effectively in the environment and that takes a lot of business and systems analysis, process engineering and testing. People who can communicate with the passionate coders and the rest of the world are in the best position to make sure that happens. Take a look at Jeff's post and get his list of possible positions. The only additions to his list that I would make are Systems Analyst and Process Architect.
And to those who say they think passionate developers are problematic - I would just have you consider that many of the most passionate are also quite pragmatic. It's your job when interviewing to find the balance that will create harmony in your shop.
Best of luck to everyone in finding their place in the sun.
