Exciting Times (& Tools) for Small Software Development Firms

I love what I do!

I love that I get to create things that help people and businesses make their day to day operations easier and often that have them be better understood in one way or another.

These past few months have been good ones for our business.  We have been in an fast generative mode and I think we have shifted into a level of momentum that will just not stop.  That is an easy thing for small software shops these days.

It is easier and easier to create good software.  It still takes a lot of skill and some time - but the tools for collaboration and coordination of product development have become so accessible and inexpensive that a group of 1-5 people can really produce quality products in a short timeframe if all the stars line up.

For us the stars are alinging under the name SimpleTime.  Very soon, we will be launching a new cloud based time-tracking system that is perfect for small and medium sized businesses.

When we do the launch, I'll post about all the great features and benefits of it - but today, I want to share some of the geeky details.

This system is built in MVC4.NET with a MongoDB backend.  We are taking advantage of a lot of new tools like Bootstrap for CSS layout and plugins and we are using a SPA (single page application approach) with KnockoutJS.  For us it is the combination of these that makes the product so fun to develop.

MongoDB is an exciting departure for the database.  This is a no-SQL database, or a document database - which works rather differently and in many ways, if designed well is far easier to implement and maintain.  We are excited to be an early leader in deploying MongoDB with .NET apps and we plan to be talking a lot about that in the future.
