A Balanced Approach to Benefit with IP and Competition

There is a fine balance between IP protection and a competitive market where small, medium and large corporations can thrive.  It is nice to see attention to the balance.  I hope that here in the US we can get our ducks in a row such that anti-trust and patent law can be seen as two sides of a coin that need to be reviewed together as they seem to be doing now in the EU.
Below are remarks made by EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia -- and taken from a ZD blogpost.
The protection of intellectual property is a cornerstone of innovation and growth. But so is competition. I think that companies should spend their time innovating and competing on the merits of the products they offer — not misusing their intellectual property rights to hold up competitors to the detriment of innovation and consumer choice."
